Meditation by Rev. Diane Rollert, 12 October 2008
How does one say a prayer for an interconnected world in crisis?
The shock waves reach us and there is uncertainty,
fear and worries.
What will be broken next?
Which domino will fall in a game too closely stacked?
The storm clouds gather above us
and we don’t know how hard the rain will fall --
If not on us
then on others,
If not in our land
then in others.
Anxiously, we wait and hope that elections will make a difference.
Always, always the smallest, the weakest, the poorest
are the first to suffer,
too often out of our earshot,
too often out of our sight.
Our work will be cut out for us,
as we find shelter in each other’s care,
as we try to rebuild what is broken in this world
The web that binds us
holds us tightly together,
even when we don’t see its connections.
Oh Earth,
we have not been good stewards.
We have forgotten gratitude and humility,
for all you give to us without measure,
without asking anything in return.
We watch as greed robs you of your perfect equilibrium.
Oh people of this earth,
may we come back into balance.
May these days be but a short readjustment,
bringing us back to our senses,
bringing us back to loving, caring goodness.
