Meditation by Rev. Diane Rollert, 18 January 2009
Spirit of Life that loves us into being,
Infinite and ultimate mystery,
May these walls be not a barrier.
Instead let our quiet longings radiate
From this sacred place where we have gathered,
As warmth from a hearth.
May our hopes travel
As waves that know no shores,
As rivers that flow from many places to one source,
As tree roots that reach and connect the whole earth
Beneath the soil.
A tiny child comes into our midst
And we dedicate her
Into the loving care of this community.
We have taken on a great task
For we must make this world a place of peace
Not just for us, but for her.
A guest arrives with his faith to share
And the building of that ground of peace and love
Begins here this day
In the opening of our hearts to bid him welcome.
We look south
And we wait with hope
As the world watches as a new president
Is about to be sworn in.
We can only hope.
We can only pray,
That we are on the verge
of greater harmony and justice in this world.
Let us give thanks
For moments of promise:
That each child is born and welcomed into loving community;
That the just and honest do become leaders;
That people of beautiful and diverse faiths and cultures
Can meet and remind each other
That they share a common compassion for humanity.
For these things,
Innocent and complex
Small and great,
Let us be filled with hope
For the flowering possibilities.
