Meditation by Rev. Diane Rollert, 15 March 2009
How long the winter has been.
We run out of patience.
Snow melts into grey ice,
revealing all we wish to hide—
gravel and garbage once carelessly forgotten.
Now all that we must do
to prepare ourselves for change,
all that we must do
to prepare ourselves for spring,
comes sharply into focus:
The grief and disappointments
that have shadowed us.
All the things we cannot control.
The worries that have weighed us down.
The children who seem to grow too fast and slip out of our reach,
The friends and loved ones
who seem to shift and change before our eyes,
The projects that loom, waiting to be completed,
The sharp words never meant to be spoken,
All waiting for a spring cleaning of our hearts.
Thankfully, the sun shines brilliantly
casting bright reflections of hope in the glassy grey.
We are crossing over the widest threshold
between barren cold
and abundant summer.
Out of the brownish muck
the suppressed grass will return.
Spring’s beauty will come,
and will be green.
With patience, with work,
may we be ready for the change.
