Meditation by Rev. Diane Rollert, 29 November 2009
Spirit of Life,
May we give thanks
for small miracles:
For a woman
nearing the end of her journey,
who is blessed and surrounded by her dearest friends.
For courage
in the desire to keep on living
with dignity
to the very last moment
even with the acceptance
that dignity in death is never guaranteed.
Let us give thanks for a gathering of former leaders
who once served on our board
who came together to share their stories
and remembered the challenge of conflict
at different times in our history,
Who told tales of being energized by the
willingness of this congregation
to care deeply about its future.
Change comes slowly,
they said,
After two tries, after three.
Change comes slowly,
but it comes.
Let us give thanks for the blessing of our elders,
who share with us their wisdom,
who have lived long and full lives,
who have known joys and sorrows,
who even in the face of adversity
speak of gratitude for lives well lived.
Let us give thanks for the young
whose journeys have just begun
who bring us energy and questions,
who speak of love.
Each of us has our calling, our mission, in life,
as grand as saving the world,
as small as saving ourselves.
However we are called,
to wait, to wonder, to be, to do,
may we give thanks for those who have walked before us
and those who walk beside us on this path.
Let us give thanks for the fruit of great determination,
and for the small, unasked for miracles,
that keep us moving forward even on the darkest days
of the approaching winter.
