This week offers moments to reflect, react, remember. This Sunday, join UCM member Sue Montgomery, newly returned from Haiti, as we reflect on what is happening and what we can do. After the service all ages can join Caroline Balderston Parry for soup and tales of pioneer times, told through journals and song.

O Haiti! Reflections from the Front
Sue Montgomery, special guest
With great relief, I am pleased to announce that journalist, and UCM member, Sue Montgomery is returning from Haiti this week. Sue has been so moved by what she has seen in the aftermath of the January 12 earthquake, that she has promised to help the people of Haiti for the rest of her life. She joins us this Sunday to reflect on her experiences. I hope you will join us.

Eleanora's Diary and Pioneer Soup
In 1835 the Reverend George Hallen, an impoverished Anglican clergyman, his wife and their ten living children emigrated from Worcestershire, England, to Upper Canada; they travelled via New York State, settling in Medonte Township, near the town of Coldwater (west of Orillia), Ontario. The Hallens brought with them "36 cubic hundred weight" of luggage, including an assortment of journals and drawing books chronicling their former poor but middle class English life, and even including the preserved heart of the tenth child, a precious daughter who died just before they emigrated. Eventually it was buried in the graveyard of St James on the Line Anglican church, in Penetanguishene, Ontario, where Rev. Hallen and his wife are also buried.
The diaries written by the fourth Hallen child, Eleanora, are the basis of Caroline's 1994 book published by Scholastic: Eleanora's Diary, The Journals of A Canadian Pioneer Girl
After a "pioneer soup and bread lunch" on Sunday January 31st, Caroline will share the Hallens' story with all interested folks, showing pictures of the area and of the actual journals, reading from the book, displaying period artifacts and maps, answering questions and even singing some of the songs of the period which Eleanora knew. 1∏ hour presentation, suitable for ages 8 to 80; Donations appreciated to benefit our Religious Education program [note, this is a fundraiser for RE, but in no way limited to RE people, as the material is fascinating to many!]

What Moves Us? Exploring Unitarian and Universalist Theology
Rev. Diane Rollert
Based on a new program by UU theologian Thandeka, we'll explore the life experiences of historic and contemporary Unitarian and Universalist thinkers and the changes of heart that deepened their faith. Sessions include William Ellery Channing, Margaret Fuller, James Luther Adams and Forrest Church.
This is an opportunity to deepen your knowledge of Unitarian Universalism while exploring your own beliefs and values, and perhaps building your own theology. No preparation required. Just bring a notebook and an open mind.
To sign up, please call or e-mail the office at 514-485-9933 or office@ucmtl.ca.
