Meditation by Rev. Diane Rollert, 13 November 2011
Nations united,
a people united,
the same thread weaving us together.
We say we affirm the inherent worth and dignity
of every person,
words that roll off our tongues
but get lost before they reach our hearts.

Today is Mother’s Day, a time to celebrate the gifts in our lives given to us by our mothers. Some of us grew up with kind, loving mothers, and find this day easy. Some of us grew up with mothers who were missing, who died, or who betrayed our trust, and had to turn elsewhere for mothering. Most of us are somewhere in between those two points, with mothers who loved us to the best of their ability, cared for us to the best of their ability, and yet found themselves human and fallible.

How far away we are
from the Middle Passage,
from the great graveyard of the Atlantic.
How far away we are from tsunamis,
earthquakes and melting nuclear reactors.
Our hearts ache for the past and for the present
that we cannot change.

Source of love.
Love so hard to define.
Beloved community
so hard to build.
How do you begin again
with love,
when disagreement arises,
when disappointments come?

Cold morning,
Grey sky,
Thankfully no ice.
Silence fills this sanctuary –
a blanketing of snow
that softens all sounds,
all the noise within our minds.

The emptiness that is full,
The ending that begins,
The darkness that is filled with light.
All things exist within the shadows of themselves.

I hold you in my heart.
For you are flesh and blood like me.

Truth to power –
Earth, you surprise us with your crushing strength.
We forget that we are insignificant to you,
as you move and change
and shake our existence into ruins.

Cold winter morning,
yet the sky is glorious before the grey clouds set in.
A sunrise of rose and red
against indigo and gold
reflected in fields of white snow.

Snow-covered morning,
the sun rises pale pink
fading into a light grey sky.
The star wheel has finally turned
and true winter approaches.

Spirit of Life,
May we give thanks
for small miracles:
For a woman
nearing the end of her journey,
who is blessed and surrounded by her dearest friends.
For courage
in the desire to keep on living
with dignity
to the very last moment
even with the acceptance
that dignity in death is never guaranteed.

Meditation by Rev. Diane Rollert, June 2009
Into this sacred place
we carry our joys and our burdens –
Gratitude for love and welcome,
Sorrow for unfulfilled dreams in a broken world,
The emptiness of letting go,
The thankfulness of being held,

Source de vie
La paix commence ici dans nos coeurs.
This is where peace begins,
within us,
within these walls,
with forgiveness and compassion.

April is the cruellest month, says the poet.
But I know that it is March.
March, the month that teases us with warmth,
and has us fools singing its praise --
Then a winter dusting of snow returns,
reminding us that lilacs
don’t really bloom this far north
until well into May.

Meditation by Rev. Diane Rollert, 15 March 2009
How long the winter has been.
We run out of patience.
Snow melts into grey ice,
revealing all we wish to hide—
gravel and garbage once carelessly forgotten.

Who shall I call out to?

Diane Rollert, 18 January 2009
Spirit of Life that loves us into being,
Infinite and ultimate mystery,
May these walls be not a barrier.
Instead let our quiet longings radiate
From this sacred place where we have gathered,
As warmth from a hearth.

Why have you forsaken your children?

Source of beauty on this crisp winter’s day
Where icicles hang like jewels from the trees,

Spirit that connects us,
Presence in which we move,
Unspoken and unknowable:
In a moment’s silence
let all we are,
let all we feel,
be contained
like a lifetime expressed in a single teardrop.

How does one say a prayer for an interconnected world in crisis?
The shock waves reach us and there is uncertainty,
fear and worries.
What will be broken next?
Which domino will fall in a game too closely stacked?
