Meditation - Not Heroes

Meditation by Rev. Diane Rollert, May 31, 2015

This morning the air remains humid
but mercifully cool,
the grass weighed down
by last evening’s rain.
The sparrows sing their song of grace
small but grateful
for the quiet rising of sun
hidden
behind the thick cloud cover.

To this day we arise,
Spirit of Life,
filling this sanctuary
with thoughts,
with questions,
with longing,
with hopes,
with exhaustion and exhilaration,
with wonder,
and tears.

There are so many stories to be told here.
So many stories that go unheard
for fear that honesty
will break all bonds,
for fear that we will be caught in our full humanity —
far less than perfect,
not the heroes and heroines
we once dreamed we’d be.

What or who becomes all powerful in our lives?
How much easier it would be
to have all the answers handed to us.
Love lost and love returned,
a thousand times each day.

Give us this day the strength
to live with the longing,
to cherish the memories,
to hold the questions close to our hearts,
to tell the stories that need to be told.

To this day we arise,
Spirit of Love,
filling this sanctuary
with everything that we are,
a moment of wholeness held
in the warm embrace
of communal breath and silence.
