Remembrance and meditation by Rev. Diane Rollert, 5 May 2013
Ruth di Giovanni died suddenly and unexpectedly on the night of Monday, 29 April 2013. The news came as a shock to all of us. Emails of remembrances for Ruth have been pouring in and we are putting together a book for her family. We are all feeling devastated by this loss.
Ruth’s heart stopped in her sleep and I do not think there could be a more peaceful way to go. It was certainly the way she had hoped it would be. On that account, I am relieved. But Ruth, you left us much to soon for us to even know how to say goodbye. You were a pillar of this community, the first face many of us would see on Sunday mornings. You gave so much to this community, organizing Java Jivers, working on the Midday Meal, hospitality, music ministry, and to your passion for social justice through your work with the USC, CUSJ and the Raging Grannies. You made us smile with your quirky humour, and you kept us laughing with your very select e-mail jokes. You welcomed us with love in your smile, in your beautiful eyes, and with big hugs. We will miss you so much.
May we hold Ruth’s family in our hearts, her sons Adrian and Julian and her brother Peter and her sister-in-law Miriam. A memorial service will be held here on Sunday, June 9th at 12:30 p.m. A light lunch will be served in Ruth’s honour that same day at 11:30 a.m. If you would like to help with preparations, please speak to Rita Izzi.
Spirit of Life,
Source of Love,
Whatever it is that holds us together:
in these times of sadness,
may we invoke your presence,
may our cries of sorrow be heard
for the love of one who has left us,
for the losses that are impossible to comprehend,
for the courage it takes,
to minister to each other,
to remember to stop, to listen,
to care, to get to know each other,
to express our thanks,
to express our love,
before it is too late
and there is only silence left
to hold us
and the memories.
May we accept the imperfections of our lives
of each other,
of the work that is left undone,
May we begin again this day,
holding onto cherished memories,
grateful for what was,
for the love we received,
for the presence of one
so beautiful, unique and treasured in our lives.
